Modeling a human hand is a challenging task. Both to create a natural-looking hand and to create one with good topology. This tutorial is an effort to address both of those issues. In this tutorial you will learn how to model a human hand with some box modeling techniques with clean topology in blender.

I can hear echo of the mouse click XD
Great tutorial! I got a very good result. Thanks so much, as always.
Finally got round to finish this: http://vimeo.com/8980403
Very cool, tweaking was quite a bit of work, especially the thumb positioning and getting my weird fingertips/nails right
Now I’ll sculpt and try texturing
Hi there, i just wanted to ask You – maybe this will be some stupid question – but where is the cut tool option window? I know that i suppose to hit ‘K’ and then LMB – and then it will show in the Operator window – but then it’s too late – can’t find it. Same with the circle option for example – when i add it then i can choose number of vertexes but when i select that circle again i can’t find options of it.
Where can I find reference images, And by tha way that is a awesome tutorial. It was extremely helpful!
@Filip – I am using the Rip tool to separate the fingers and so far it seems to be working.
thanks man, exactly what I’ve been looking for!!!
Aammmm, at 7.08 shift+j : I guess the newer version of the key is alt+j or atleast on v2.57
Either alt+j or the F key work for me as of 2.58.
Great tutorial Mr. Williamson. I took this and then removed edge loops from my mesh to create a great low poly hand. Thanks for the time you guys put into this stuff. I have learned a LOT from you.
WOW! thanks a lot man. I have always been trying to make a decent FPS but the my hand I always make looks soooo bad. This helped A LOT thanks.
Great to hear! Got any shots of your hand model?

Total beginner here, but at 3:14-ish when you select the vertices to move around when you click the top one, the vertex under it gets selected as well, I can’t get that to happen for me too, help?
Hi CompletelyLost, your probably in 2.6? If so, youl just want to go into wireframe mode, hit Z and select the vertext underneath, thats all I did to follow this tut.
I also forgot, you might be talking about `limit selection to visible,’
this is an option on the toolbar below your 3d veiw ( it looks like two cubes one infront and one behind) with this enabled youl be able to select both sets of vertices from the top view. Hope this helps.
How does one pull off the move at 6:33 in blender 2.59?
After you make the cut with K + LMB hit F6 pick Multicut from the first drop down and set your number of cuts.
at about 2.56 what is that shortcut?
I’m using Blender 2.58 and it say i cant join in editmode…
Jonathan Williams = Master Guru, Nuff said XD
Jonathan, I know this is an old tutorial, but I am stumped on one point and hope you can help. Version 2.6.2 (actually since 2.5) the knife cut menu has disappeared. You can still use K to do a “cut at cursor” and a shift-K to do “cut at mid-point” but I cannot find multi-cut. I can still use one of the other two, but it is a bit more work and as far as I can see, I need to make quads from some of the tris first as I move from finger junction to finger junction. Hope you can help.

p.s. I bought an annual membership yesterday, felt that I had been lurking long enough.
Looks like the answer was above. Hit F6 after the cut. Works fine. Knife does not appear to work the same from block to block, but he multi cut does work. Thanks, Squeakie for posting that reply earlier. (I know, I should read all entries before I make a new one)
