In part 2 of this Teddy Bear tutorial we will be looking at home to make a nice burlap texture with nothing but procedural materials.

Note: in order to follow this tutorial fully, you can download the texture plugin here: http://www-users.cs.umn.edu/~mein/blender/plugins/texture.html.

Great tutorial. I was curious if it’s possible to apply the textures such that some of the procedural textures react to the the seam, while others don’t. for example, the bear is stained with dirt after it’s made, instead of before, so you don’t have inconsistencies with dirt on side of the seam and not the other.

If you map the dirt textures to the Orco channel (or any other channel other than UV, to an extent) then it’ll ignore the seams and map it to the whole model.

Really awesome, as you though, I didn’t know that’s procedural material.
Btw, thanks a lot for the repository plugins’ link.

Excellent tutorial. After building the bear & textures, I tried doing a simple animation (the camera moves around the bear) and there was a lot of texture-swimming going on. I swapped the noise texture with a cloud texture (as described in another tutorial on the site) so it wouldn’t change with each frame, but the swimming continued.

So I baked all the textures — one texture at a time — and reassembled the bear material (it didn’t look quite the same, but still looked good). The swimming disappeared almost entirely in the new animation. (!!!!)

I believe this has something to do with the MIPMAP feature, and I’m wondering if you know any way to have a similar blurring/resolution-reduction take place with procedural textures, or any other ideas for softening procedural textures as they turn/drift away from the camera. Thanks again for the terrific tutorial!

Answering my previous post, at least in part: turn on “Full OSA” for the burlap material (not for the render, but the material!). This does a lot to reduce swimming, but it also significantly raises the rendering time….

    hello

It’s a great turorial, and I was trying to do it with blender 2.5. alpha 2.
I downloaded the linux version of the plugin (r_weave.Linux.so) and set up the texture plugins path pointing to …/blender/plugins/texture.

but when I chose plugin for my texture I get a “nothing yet” message and no “load button”

Is it a not yet implemented feature in 2.5 or am I doing something wrong? I compiled the two textures plugins that came with v2.5 but they did nor appear.

the plugin is working in blender 2.49.

To the best of my knowledge texture plugins are not yet working, in any form with 2.5. I would not quote me on that, though, as I haven’t even tried it.

Thank you very much for the tutorials Jonathan, They are very much appreciated. I also was halted at the load plugin part of the tutorial with the message “Nothing yet” (2.5 alpha2)… No big deal though as I have only just started using blender so just learning the interface and modeling tools is good for me. Ones again, Love the tutorials clear, informative and beautifully demonstrated. 10/10

I’m quite new with blender was having a problem with the UV Test part of the tutorial. When you start scaling the various parts in the uvtest window, nothing is scaling on the bear. Not quite sure what i haven’t selected.

Okay so I have no idea what went wrong here. It was going fine until it came time to resize the texture so it wasn’t all different sizes all over his body. I hit render and the whole thing ended up a blotchy dark brown and black and the texture only showed up in a few small squares on the teddy. So i have tried going back and redoing the uv unwrap, no luck. I tried reloading the texture, no change. I took off the texture and left it with a plain material color, it still had the blotchy dark coloring. I have no idea how to fix it and I am running out of ideas. Please help!

    Great tutorial!
Had a lot of fun making the bear. There was a problem with the plugin and it took me a while to figure it out but I successfully finished.
    Thanks so much!

That looks really good! If you wanted to take it even further you could add a bump map to the bricks and then even out the lighting by using a key lamp (like you have now but toned down a bit) and then a couple fill lamps to even out the lighting.

      Keep it up!

    Excellent tutorial!
I’m a total 3D/Blender newbie. I started out with part 1 of this tutorial yesterday and after that I felt very capable of modelling in Blender! :)
However, when it comes to the texturing I’m having trouble with the r_weave.dll plugin.
I don’t know where to put the file or how to load the plugin.
I’d be very grateful if someone could post a “Blender plugins for dummies” walkthrough with all essentials steps for a newbie like myself. :)
    Thanks again.

    Oh, I forgot – I’m using Blender 2.53.
If it isn’t possible to use the r_weave.dll plugin in Blender 2.53 can I achive (almost) the same result with a tileable fabric texture (image)?

      Hi Henrik,

Unfortunately the texture plugins do not work in 2.5. I am not sure if there are plans to reimplement this feature. Creating the burlap texture in 2.5 is something I would like to revisit in the near future.

    Hi…

So does anybody know what’s up with the link for the plug-in and/or any of the other plug-ins? This URL does not see to display in any of my browsers.

    http://www-users.cs.umn.edu/~mein/blender/plugins/texture.html

Would sure love to complete this tutorial, but since it’s based on the r_weave plug-in, it would be good to have access to it.

One other question… will the r_weave plug-in work on an iMac? OSX 10.6. I noticed Johnathon referenced r_weave.dll

Hi Jonathon… making my second pass through the Teddy Bear tutorial. Finished part1 & part 2 of the tutorial in Blender 2.49 and was pleased with the result. Now I’m trying the tutorial out using 2.5 Beta (2.55.0 r32738). Finished part 1 and I think my Teddy turned out better this time around. I was about to add the procedural texture but after adding the material, then adding a new texture, when I pop open the Type list to select Plug-In, it does not appear as an option. I see all the standard options, plus some new ones. What have I done wrong?

    Thanks,

    Brett

Using 2.5.5 Beta… added a new material then added a new texture. When I opened the list the specify the texture type, I do not see plug-in listed. Is there another process for using the r_weave plug-in in Blender 2.5?

    Thanks,

    Brett

Jonathon replied to let me know that texture plug-ins are not currently supported under Blender 2.5. I saw this as an opportunity to experiment with some of the built-in Blender 2.5 texturing options. Here is a link to the Teddy Bear I created using strictly Blender 2.5 Materials and Textures. No UV Maps… no Photoshop… strictly Blender 2.5 built-in textures. Have a look, feel free to provide constructive feedback:

Thanks to Jonathon for all the great tutorials he provides on Blender Cookie. I have learned so much from him and I continue to learn every time I complete one of these tutorials. Well worth my quarterly contribution.
